A 34-year-old Vernonia man was arrested on Monday following a domestic violence incident involving a three-hour standoff and multiple criminal charges.
The incident was part of what law enforcement officer called a case of "ongoing abuse" of a woman living with the suspect.
The Columbia County sheriff's department and officers from the Critical Incident Response Team responded to a call sent in just after 1 a.m. The man was reportedly going into and out of the house several times after deputies arrived, refusing to surrender. The man reportedly fired at least one shot at the home during the incident.
The incident came to a close after police used a stun grenade and a Taser on the man after a standoff that lasted between three and four hours.
Police reportedly obtained evidence of ongoing domestic abuse at the scene, including a shotgun. The victim was found inside and treated by medics. Police said the woman reported that the suspect had fired a shotgun in the house and threatened to shoot her dogs.
The man has been charged with 10 offenses, including menacing, kidnapping, animal abuse, coercion, kidnapping, strangulation. Various assaults reportedly took place over the past couple weeks as well. He was also wanted for probation violation for an unrelated fourth-degree assault case.
