Drivers with a history of drunk driving would be required to drive only vehicles having a Z-designated license plate. According to sources, the license plates would cost an additional $100 and would only be valid for three years. The Z would be the last character in a series of letters and numbers.
Motorcycle riders having a history of drunk driving would also be required to have a special Z designated license, which would cost an additional $25.
Proponents of the measure say that the license plates will be easily recognizable and provide drivers additional safety on the road. And clearly such a measure would have a deterrent effect on those considering whether to drink and drive.
The bill is one of several measures that are currently being considered by Washington lawmakers. Another of the proposed bills would require longer sentences for first-time offenders and require individuals convicted of negligent or reckless driving to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles.
Whether one agrees with the proposed measures or not, it is true that the consequences of a DUI conviction are nothing to take lightly. Even on a first conviction, one may face up to a $1,000 fine and up to one year of imprisonment if one's BAC is 0.15 or less. If one's BAC is above that level, one could face up to a $5,000 fine and up to one year of imprisonment.
