According to the Seattle Post Intelligencer, a former Huskies wide receiver has been charged with misdemeanor domestic violence.
The charged athlete, who was a junior last season, played as a punt and kickoff returner, as well as a wide receiver throughout his time in the football program. In a statement released by University of Washington football coach Steve Sarkisian earlier this month, it was announced that the athlete will no longer be a part of the UW football program.
The charge, which came last Friday, is related to accusations of property damaged to the athlete's ex-girlfriend's home in February.
According to the Seattle Times, the incident occurred in the early morning on February 20. The athlete apparently became jealous when he found out his ex-girlfriend was celebrating her 21st birthday with her ex-boyfriend. When he couldn't reach her by repeated phone calls, he broke inter her home and damaged the door in her room while she was sleeping. He reportedly fled the scene when he learned the police were coming.
Four days after the incident, another resident of the house obtained a temporary harassment protection order, which was lifted on March 8
The misdemeanor charge is punishable with up to a year in jail
Sources say the football player is the third UW athlete to be charged with a crime this month. Another football player has been charged with resisting arrest and possession of marijuana related to an incident on March 3 in which he fled police after he was stopped for having a burnt out headlight. Police spotted marijuana in the car during the stop and the athlete fled when he was told he was being arrested.
On March 8, a UW basketball player was charged with providing alcohol to a minor in relation to an incident in which he was accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl. While there was not enough evidence to charge the athlete of sexual assault, the Seattle City Attorney's Office filed the alcohol charged after an investigation.
