A Vancouver woman was recently arrested and now faces jail time for attempting to sell her three-day-old baby at a Taco Bell.
The 36-year-old woman, who apparently has an extensive criminal record including drug possession and domestic violence charges, reportedly offered to sell her child to a customer who commented that he was cute on July 14.
According to Sgt. Schanaker from the Clark County Sheriff's Office, "She basically handed the child to the customer, saying he's three days old, this is his name, and would you like to buy him for $500." Sources said she had offered to sell the child for a price between $500 and $5,000.
When police arrested the woman, she denied attempting to sell her child. At the time, she had several outstanding warrants on other charges.
The woman appeared in court on Monday, and the judge set bail at $50,000 and appointed her a defense attorney. Child selling is a Class C felony in Washington, and the woman may be facing jail time. Her arraignment has been set for July 29.
Court papers said the woman is currently unemployed and uses welfare and food stamps. She told reporters she was currently living at a motel until she was able to find another shelter. A friend of the woman told reporters at her hearing that she is currently going through a divorce and may be going through postpartum depression.
Since the incident occurred, Child Protective Services has taken custody of the woman's baby, which was born on July 11.
