The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that a 22-year-old man Shoreline died Wednesday after a confrontation with police led to police to open fire upon him.
Although the incident didn't seem to involve any domestic violence, the young man reportedly had a history of domestic violence with his girlfriend, and had previously violated a no contact order.
Police responded after a call was made reporting a disturbance around 1 p.m. on Wednesday. When police arrived, a 25-year-old woman was outside the home with blood on her person. When police approached, the woman told them her boyfriend was inside with a knife and was suicidal. She told officers she tried to wrestle the knife away from him, and was cut in the process. At the time of the response, the man's father was also apparently inside the home.
Shortly after arriving, the man emerged from the house with a chef's knife in one hand and a shotgun in another, causing police to open fire upon him. Sources said the young woman had apparently had a domestic violence no contact order against the man.
The young man had apparently been struggling with alcohol and domestic problems, and had a criminal record. According to police records, the young man had a felony assault conviction as well as a gross misdemeanor assault conviction from earlier this year. He had also pleaded guilty to violating a domestic violence protection order against his girlfriend. Under that order, he was required to remain at least 500 feet away from her until 2016.
Some friends of the young man have expressed anger over the shooting and said that the officers shot the man unnecessarily. The two officer involved in the response have been put on standard administrative leave while the Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit conducts an investigation.
