The Seattle Mariners and Verizon Wireless are reportedly working together on an effort to reduce domestic violence in the community. Fans present at the Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox game on August 12 will be invited to donate used wireless phones and accessories for the benefit of domestic violence survivors as part of the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program.
The Hopeline program collects used wireless phones, batteries and phone accessories from any provider and recycles, refurbishes and sells them, donating any proceeds to awards grants and wireless phones and airtime to non-profit human services and law enforcement agencies for the assistance of domestic violence survivors.
Sources said this is the sixth consecutive year in a row that the Mariners have teamed up with Verizon Wireless on the effort. Last year, Mariners fans contributed over 1,000 used phones and accessories to the HopeLine program. Verizon has donated over $150,000 in HopeLine grants to domestic violence agencies throughout Washington in the past two years. It has also provided over 1,200 wireless phones to domestic violence agencies throughout the United States. Each of the phones comes with one year of air time.
HopeLine dop boxes will reportedly be located outside each entrance to the Safeco Field between four and seven o'clock. Otherwide phones and accessories can be dropped off at Guest Services at Sections 128 and 329 and The Pen during the game. They can also be dropped off at any Verizon Wireless Communications store at any time of the year.
