Former Major League Baseball Manny Ramirez was released from jail in Broward County, Florida on Tuesday after he was arrested on charges of domestic violence.
At the time of the incident, the former Red Sox outfielder was apparently in violation of a protection order held by his wife, who called authorities from the couple's home near Ft. Lauderdale.
According to Ramirez's wife, he hit her in the face with an open hand while they were arguing and caused her to fall and hit her head on part of the couple's bed. Police reports indicate that she was afraid the situation would become worse, so she contacted police. When all was said and done, Ramirez's wife had minor injuries, including swelling on the side of her face and a contusion on the back of her head.
Ramirez reportedly denied his wife's allegations and said he had been holding his wife by her shoulders when she attempted to move and consequently hit her own head.
Ramirez was reportedly released on $2,500 bail on Tuesday after he spent the night in Broward County Jail. When confronted by the media, Ramirez commented that he had "closed" his case, though it wasn't clear exactly what he meant.
If he is convicted on his charges of misdemeanor domestic battery, Ramirez faces up to a year in jail.
Looking at the reports of this incident, it isn't clear exactly clear what took place in the couple's dispute. Domestic violence situations are not always easy to sort out. Sometimes, like this case, there is disagreement as to what actually happened.
Sometimes people face domestic violence charges for actions like pushing or grabbing car keys out of somebody's hands, throwing water in somebody's face, or for engaging in verbal threats or threatening behavior. While violence is never a healthy way to deal with a dispute, many people accused of domestic violence aren't even aware that they can face serious charges for such behavior.
