In our previous post, we began looking at a story about a Marine, Scott Sciple, who has been charged with DUI manslaughter as a result of an accident last April in Tampa which left the victim dead.
That incident, according to the man's attorney, was caused by the Marine's post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injury which he acquired in combat. Sciple, he argues, was having a dissociative episode at the time of the accident and believed he was on military deployment.
The victim's wife claims that the Marines are at fault for the accident, since they failed to properly treat Sciple's condition. According to sources, Marine Corps investigators wrote an 860-page report detailing deficiencies in the Marines' treatment of Sciple's condition.
According to the report, the Marines' procedures for handling Marine's with post-traumatic stress disorder are less than satisfactory. The report noted that the Marine Corps needs to be more attentive when dealing with Marines with post-traumatic stress disorder, especially those who also have brain injuries.
One of the areas needing improvement was the Marine Corps system of "self-diagnosis and self-reporting" in regard to post-traumatic stress disorder. The report also noted that Sciple's superiors did not exercise the best judgment by transferring him to the Air Force Base in Tampa, as his conditions were not sufficiently treated at that point and compromised his mental stability.
Scott Sciple's attorney maintains that the Marine's condition was made worse by the Marine Corps failure to properly treat his condition. Scott Sciple will be entering an insanity defense at his trial. He is currently scheduled for a hearing on November 14.
