A 24-year-old Everett, Washington man reportedly crashed into a pedestrian walkway, striking two individuals on Monday night and killing one.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the driver went across a raised median on the onramp to Highway 2 going eastbound, then went through a dirt berm, around secured metal pylons and then onto the pedestrian where the two had been walking. At this point, it isn't clear what charges will come from the incident, but police suspect that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The two pedestrians had apparently been walking on the side of the road back to their home in Ebey after their car ran out of gas. At the time of the crash, they were walking east on the walkway, which is separated from the highway be a barrier made of concrete.

The 55-year-old woman was reportedly hit first by the right side mirror of the vehicle. The 47-year-old man, who was walking several feet ahead of her, was then hit and thrown over the side of the trestle.

The male pedestrian died at the scene, and the female was treated and released at the scene of the accident. The driver, following the accident, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of severe leg injuries.

The driver is reportedly suspected of driving under the influence, though sources didn't provided many details about impending charges or evidence, other than that State Troopers took a blood draw from the driver. The results were not indicated.

As we pointed out in our last post, drunk driving can often end in consequences much greater than the small mistakes made along the way.
