Father of boy who brought gun to school has domestic violence conviction

A 9-year-old boy from Washington that brought a loaded .45-caliber hand gun to school reportedly had a rough home life. Between a father that has been convicted of domestic violence against the boy and a mother who grappled with drug problems and a fraud conviction, the boy did not have many good influences to draw from.

But, was this to blame for his actions that left an 8-year-old female student with very serious injuries?

The boy brought the loaded gun to school one day. Authorities believe that he got the gun from his mother's house during a visit. The boy carried the gun in his backpack, but when he slammed his backpack down on a desk, the gun went off and a bullet hit the female student.

That student is still in intensive care and faces a long list of surgeries before she can fully recover. Police charged the young boy with unlawful possession of a gun, third-degree assault and bringing a dangerous weapon to school.

He was being held by authorities, but his friends and family scraped up the $50,000 bail needed to bring the boy home where he will await future court appearances.

The boy was emotional during a recent court proceeding and one of his teachers said she did not think he hurt his fellow student on purpose and that he has a good heart.

Responsibility should ultimately be placed on the parents. Aside from domestic violence and drug problems, his parents both gave up their parental rights four years ago. This left his grandmother to adopt the boy, but she passed away in 2010. The boy was then placed with his uncle, who is now caring for him. The boy's uncle expressed his sympathy to everyone affected by what he called an uncharacteristic incident.

The boy's mother, who owned the gun, could also face charges in the future.
